Green Schools Legislation

Dan Josephs, NJSSA Board of Trustees Vice President and Chair of the Legislative Committee announced that a preliminary draft of legislation concerning the use of environmentally sensitive cleaning products in schools has been submitted to the Assembly Office of Legislative Scheduling. The bill would require the Department of Education to adopt a cleaning policy for schools and child care centers with 50 or more students with DOE oversight responsibility annually. Josephs reported that Assemblyman Reed Gusciora, Deputy Majority Leader from Trenton, has agreed to sponsor the bill. A final version of the bill would need to be introduced in the Assembly before the end of June when the Legislature adjourns for the summer recess. Passage of the bill would hopefully take place in the fall.

Josephs said the Legislative Committee and NJSSA members would be invited to an open meeting in July to discuss the bill and provide feedback before the bill is passed. NJSSA members will receive an invitation to this meeting in June.
Operation Clean Sweep

NJSSA's Annual Operation Clean Sweep is scheduled for October 17, 2009. Operation Clean Sweep is a social outreach project of the New Jersey Sanitary Supply Association. Now in its 16th year, NJSSA's Operation Clean Sweep was founded in 1993 and was expanded to other regional and state associations as a volunteer community service program. In 1995, Operation Clean Sweep became a national community-based program of the International Sanitary Supply Association. In 1996, "Operation Clean Sweep" received an award of excellence from the American Society of Association Executives "Advance America" campaign. Nationally, over 1,000 member companies have participated in Operation Clean Sweep over the years with more than 500 member company volunteers participating in the yearly events.

Operation Clean Sweep selects deserving community-based facilities each year to which janitorial and sanitary supplies are donated or at which NJSSA member volunteers go onsite to clean the selected facility. In 2007, the 15th Annual Operation Clean Sweep was held at HomeFront in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Over 25 NJSSA members and their friends and families volunteered to clean this facility, and 20 NJSSA member companies donated cleaning supplies and equipment which was housed at Norshel Industries in Croydon, PA. In 2008, jan-san product and monetary donations were presented to Mayor Corey Booker of Newark to be used for the City of Newark and its Neighborhood Services facilities.

Operation Clean Sweep Chair, Dan Rubinstein, is visiting NJ facilities to select the 2009 cleaning location. NJSSA Members will receive volunteer and donation forms in July.
ISSA CIMS/ICE Certification

The "ISSA Certification Expert" (I.C.E.) Workshop will take place June 25 at the Embassy Suites Philadelphia Airport Hotel, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Reasons you and your top sales people should attend the workshop and achieve I.C.E. Certification in 2009:

  • Garner in-depth knowledge about the popular Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS), which top organizations use as a primary benchmarking resource.
  • Evaluate ways to save your customers money. Custodial operations around the country must reduce labor budgets by 5-10 percent, and past attendees have saved customers more than six figures annually by helping them implement the management best practices outlined in CIMS and achieve certification to the Standard.
  • Gain corner-office access with existing and new accounts with the operational and budgetary knowledge you'll learn in this course.
  • Strengthen relationships with your customers by helping them evaluate, reduce and redeploy their workforces in challenging economic times.

Register today at http://issa.com/data/File/CIMS/ICE%20Reg%20Form%20Philly%2009.pdf). Members of both NJSSA and ISSA may receive a discount on the course. Please contact Dan Wagner at Daniel@issa.com to see if you qualify.
